Majorca, 26th March, a dawn and a departure

Image
Saturday, our last morning in Majorca, so I got up early and went out to photograph sunrise from the beach. It looked as if it was to be another warm day, but at lunchtime we would be flying home, a journey that was to be a lot less onerous than the one that had brought me here. The first picture is a panorama made from 9 vertical pictures

Holkham beach seascapes - the horses

Image
I spent  a day in Holkham last week, when the weather was warm and the sea ripe for bathing. We spent some time watching the horses being exercised along the shoreline and here are some pictures from this. I have used intentional camera movement and, in some cases multiple exposure, with these shots.

Seals at Horsey

Image
After the storm in Happisburgh we drove round to Horsey beach to see if there were any seals left. There were a couple of young ones and a few adults who were very blase ´ about human contact and let me get within 6 ft of them (they were a bit large and a little scary though). One of the young ones did not look well. I guess they have all been lucky to have survived. The wind was causing the sand to move across the surface of the beach and the waves were rolling in.

Destruction of Fort Hitler in Wissant

Image
Just before I went to South America in April, Alan and I had a week in northern France. We spent the first night in Wissant, a seaside resort west of Calais for which we have some affection. Last year we went to Wissant in September and I took pictures of a sunset over the beach which has a number of concrete bunkers built by the Nazis in the second world war. Here is one of them. Yes, I know they are ugly and a reminder of a sad past, but I quite liked these structures.  This year things have changed and the burghers of Wissant are intent on improving their beach with some heavy machinery. This is the same structure (I had cloned out the DANGER notice on last year's photograph). The destruction has also seemed to have accelerated the erosion of  the low cliff by the sea. While we were in the area we visited Cap Gris Nez and here are a couple of pictures from the surrounding countryside.

New Year in Northumberland

Image
Just spent 5 days in Northumberland just south of Alnwick, where we spent some time on the coast and one day in the Cheviots looking at the course of the River Coquet which flows out to the sea at Amble. We also visited Lindisfarne - one of Alan's favourite places. There was nobody on the long beach at the north side of the island and we spent some time there. The tide was right out and the sea seemed miles away. The sand is an extraordinary reddish colour and is banded. The wet sand reflected the sky which was very dramatic.
